History of the Diary Manuscript

The manuscript fragment that survives today was submitted in 1953 to the Public Archives of Nova Scotia by Edith Elliot, then aged 74, the great-granddaughter of Louisa's next younger sister Charlotte, who in 1821 married one Jonathan Elliot. Submitted at the same time were manuscripts of diaries kept by Louisa's grandfather Robert Collins and, it is thought, by her father Stephen. The diaries had been given to Miss Elliot, some time before his death in 1927, by her great-uncle Herbert Elliot, a son of Charlotte. It would seem likely that Herbert inherited them from his mother.
