Spending the Evening

The line that distinguishes taking tea from spending the evening may be a line that in some instances is blurred. Tea visits would tend to be shorter and typically limited to female visitors. The evening visit would be much longer, might but usually wouldn't include tea, and would often involve a mixed group--a group usually made up of young women and young men .

Some evening gatherings might best be described as parties , and on one occasion even the word "party" doesn't seem strong enough. After Christmas, there is a "ball" held at Mount Edward.

References to evening visits--whether involving two or three visitors or a larger number--are even more frequent than references to tea visits . And it seems worth pointing out that the evenings on which people gather are no more likely to be on the weekend than during the week .
